Wiki portals
Hi all. Some of you might have noticed I've been busy with setting up some portal pages on the wiki. This is part of a project I've been working on to expand the wiki a bit, make it more professional, and provide new and old players alike with a new way of engaging with our world! Think of them as landing pages for a given topic - a way to explore a nation or a topic in context, with plenty of links to learn more.

So far we have three nation portals (Anisora, Kamura and Vittmark), one continents portal (Anaria) and two new topic portals (nobility and war). The latter two are the beginnings of a wider project to get a portal page for most of the major topics on our wiki. Other topics I have considered for a portal are: geography, history, politics, culture, religion etc., although any topic with a large enough catalogue of related articles would work.

But this is far from my own project - I'd love to see others get involved. Apart from setting these portals up, updating them is a great way to get involved. Naturally nation portals should be updated by their respective owners, but topic and continent portals could be updated by anyone who wants to. It provides an opportunity for players to showcase some of their favourite articles etc. on any given topic. Ideally these pages would be updated every month or so.

If anyone wants to set up a new portal, such as a nation or topic portal, or wants to update an exisiting portal with their picks for featured articles, biographies etc. then let me know, or go right ahead! You'll find the portal templates here for full instructions, but if you want some help, just let me know.

Hopefully these portals will be a new way to engage with the wiki, and encourage new and old players alike to reengage with various topics - I know I've found loads of pages I'd never seen before making these!

RE: Wiki portals
I think we should go ahead with the geography and history portals though they're focus should on non-nation specific themes overall since the nations can be covered in their own portals.

Geography could look at geological processes on Gotha, maybe some understanding of it's natural sciences and the such and focus on large continental scale topographic features that influence climates and geopolitics etc.

History would cover among other things past civilisations and Gotha's ancient history like the lore we created following the Parnathian Empire and Dragar Monopoly. Also this portal could link to articles about Gotha's Age of Exploration and the dawn of industrialism, key subject areas that need developing further.

I'd also like an Astronomy portal that details the nature of the Alir system, all it's celestial bodies and the Tireal cycle.

We should call a council to commence a phase of more general worldbuilding! I think that would kick things into gear quite nicely.

RE: Wiki portals
I'm glad you like the format! History and geography portals make sense as the first ones to tackle as a community. While I've written a lot of history on the wiki, including the Dragar Monopoly page, I'm certainly no geographer. I will happily leave that to others more knowledgeable in that area than I. I love mountains and have made numerous pages on them - but like much of my worldbuilding I tackle it from more of a societal and cultural perspective than a geological one.

In terms of specific pages and information on 'large continental scale topographic features that influence climates', that all needs writing! We've got some really nice info inside the respective nation pages, but not many pages specially devoted to these sorts of topics we could link to. Similarly with the macro-history. Pages on the Gothan age of exploration and dawn of industrialisation still need to be written by us all!

I do like the sound of an astronomy portal - it would be the ideal way to introduce the unique features of Gotha's solar system!

RE: Wiki portals
I've created a portal help page for anyone struggling with updating or creating a portal page. It's pretty general, but provides an overview that should get everyone started. It also explains what portals are and why (I think) they are a useful addition to our worldbuilding project.

It can be found at GothaWiki:Portal.

RE: Wiki portals
I'm already struggling with updating my Vittmark portal, so I'm not going to take on extra assignments her ATM. The portal is a driving force behind page development and that takes time... So all in all, a very good idea. But I´m struggling...

No problem Pep. Anything I can help with? Or just struggling in terms of lack of time?

RE: Wiki portals
If it is helpful to Gotha, I have a standard template I use as a portal page that works really well.

I am happy to PM you a sample for you to look at - I use it in all my other non-Gotha projects (I don't want to come across as advertising or poaching, but you can totally copy and paste the whole she-bang and use it.)

I've already written the code and templates for the portals, using the wikipedia format. But thanks! I'd be interested to see what it looks like, so sent it over!

RE: Wiki portals
(just lack of time... inspiration is hardly a problem. I have the follow-up of the Aspasian thing already lined up, 22,000 words and counting...)
