Definition

Altaia is defined as the prime land mass on the northern hemisphere of Gotha. It is bordered by the Stolvic Ocean, Winthorp Straits, Sea of Narayaq, Connack's Passage, Sno Pass, Whitekaartu Sea, Southern Shangti, Shangti Ocean, Hwandeon Channel, Altaian Artic Sea, Tao Strait and Arctic Ocean.

The Tellwo Islands, Frigid Islands, New Hoffnung, Discovery Islands, Prince Edward Islands, Radhrian, Klein Radhrian, Cutland Islands and Xholate are all considered to be a part of Altaia. The Gruen Sea, Chaim Strait, Julian Sea, Alberian Gulf, Sea of Conquest, Gulf of Prosperity, Howling Seas, Icy Throat and Refuge Bay are all bodies of seawater within the definition of Altaia.

To some extent, Altaia and D'Runia could be considered one manjor continent, only divided by the narrow Connack's Passage.

Etymology

The word Altaia is thought to have its roots in the Auresian word altus and Anisoran alto, meaning "high". As a term it refers to the Altaian Range, the immense mountain chain on the western flank of the continent.

A minority backed explanation however puts the origin of altaia in the Achtlic languages. The word al-tage meaning "noble receiver" is thought to be the source of the name. This view is only put forward by stoldavo-centric scholars.

A third possible source is the Parnethi word althaleia which stands for "to blossom", but there are no contemporary resources connecting the Parnethi with exploration or settlement in Altaia.

History

Populated orginally from the northeast, manifesting in pre-historic civilizations. Except the south, there even separate influx from the east.

Geography and extent

The Altaian Reach (or Aklanan Reach) is the northeastern region, which has historically been settled and heavily influenced culturally by people from West Davai, mostly Sriaav and Ameratsu Samzayids but also minorities of Yan-Xiangren migrants who were brought over as labourers.

Political geography

The political geography of Altaia changed immensely during the Pan Anarian War. Before the war, Anarian presence was confined to settlements on the coastline, whereas most of Altaia still consisted of independant nations. Because of the war, Anarian nations needed reliable sources of raw material, production, labor and soldiers. The coastal strongholds were turned into territorial colonial holdings.

At the end of the war, the mass immigration by the Wolgos had an enormous impact, wiping out dozens of existing nations in the process. The animosity between the Wolgos and the Häverist Commonwealth led by Helreich continues to this day in inland Altaia. The remaining indigenous nations inland mainly serve as buffer states between colonial holdings in the coastal regions.

Culture

There are five distinctly different main cultural manifestations in Altaia.

  • The xxx on the western coast is influenced heavily by Anarian contacts and mostly isolated from inland and eastern cultures due to the geographical circumstances.
  • The southern cultures around the Julian Sea have extended eastward over the last 3-4 centuries.
  • The southeastern and inland cultures show internal relations and are thought to have a common source around xxx.
  • The northeastern cultures of the Altaian Reach has been heavily influenced by people from West Davai, mostly Sriaav and Ameratsu Samzayids. These cultures extend across the northern and eastern Altaian shores in ethnic and cultural enclaves.
  • The Telwotti related people have a distinct culture of their own on the northern shores, in the northeast and the colder inland sections.
