Overview

Ayatawantin is an Amberian Dominion located in the southernmost point of Altaia, encompassing the island of Ayatawantin and the south of Radhrian, called Yunko Ma by its native population. Ayatawantin was an accident. Amberian settlement at the time was largely focused along the coasts of D’Runia and the Sea of Nayaraq, with little, if any, attention paid to the archipelagos of the southern seas, still largely the express domain of indigenous empires. The Azix of D’Runia had not yet entered their slow, inexorable decline, and the lords of Yunko Ma lived in sumptuous coastal cities instead of damp mountain caves. These two peoples were often at each other’s throats, and it was not all unusual for Amberian adventurers to fight for a side, if the pay was good enough. Sometimes, the pay was a kingdom.

In 7220, Anis Hrolfschilde, considered little more than a pirate to other Amberians, found herself the new mistress of Ayatawantin in payment for services rendered. Following her actions in the First Azix War two decades later (ironically, against the very people who had given her her fief in the first place), she found herself a member of the Amberian peerage, the Princess of Ayatawantin, a title her descendants hold to this day.

Anis’s Island, as it is sometimes called, was a gateway: the rest of the southern colonies could not have materialized without it, and its positions as a critically important military base and stop along the east-west trade route (to be named) have remained unchanged, even after the Civil War, something the current governor and duchess, another Anis, hopes to continue.

Politics and Government

Anis Hrolfeschilde combined many of the customs and symbols of the old native monarchy with her own style of absolute rule, and supported this with an Amberian-trained and educated bureaucracy. The Principality is afforded a large degree of independence in return for its continued submission to the Republic United.

Geography and Demographics

Largely tropical, both islands are covered with low-lying jungles. The Principality lies at the very western edge of the band of major equatorial rainfall, and is protected from the worst of it by the mountains of Radhrian.

The indigenous population is a mixture of the Ir’ust and Azix peoples. The Cheltai comprise maybe 1% of the population, but most of the riches and power is concentrated within their hands. The Faith has made significant inroads with the native population.
