Marches of Stachelort

The six marches of Stachelort are the first-level administrative subdivisions of that country. The marches (Stoldish: mark) have existed in some form since the early-5200s when the Orkanan Realm introduced the concept of nobility to Nester Major. During those times, Nester Major was considered the borderlands for the Realm. Until the formation of the Duchy of Stachelort in 7152, the march was highest-level governmental authority on Nester Major.

Historically, the marches were each ruled by a margrave (Stoldish: markgraf), a member of the nobility, and rule was passed down hereditary lines on the male side of the family. Since the reign of the nobility ended in 7545 as a result of the Preservationist Coup, governance of each march has been entrusted to an appointed superintendent.

Etymology

The word "march" derives from an Xholdem root *mereg-, meaning "edge, boundary". The root *mereg- produced Dragar margo ("margin") and Achlt marz ("borderland"). The Stoldavic *marko gave rise to the Imperial Stoldavic marka "boundary, sign", denoting a borderland between two centers of power. In modern Stoldish, mark denotes a territory, usually of more importance than a county.

Marches

There are six marches in the Republic of Stachelort. Each march is subordinate to the national government. The head of each march is the superintendent who is appointed by and reports directly to the Autokrat.

Government Quarter, left, and Merchants' Quarter, right, along Seetor's Hauptstraße. The Foreign Ministry is front left with the State Ministry behind it.

The second largest march, at 69,881 km2 (43,422 sq mi), Brücht is the most populous, with 10,260,644 people, of the six marches. Three of Stachelort's six boroughs (Stoldish: stadtgemeinde, plural stadtgemeinden) are located in Brücht: Besterhaven, Golfherberge, and Seetor, the national capital. The borooughs are semi-autonomous, on par with the marches and not subordinate to them. Brücht has eleven provinces (Stoldish: provinz, plural provinzen) as subdivisions.

Brücht is an important source of tin, lead, and stone in the Stachelortan homelands. In addition to being the most industrially developed of the six marches, Brücht is also the country's bread basket, outproducing all the other marches combined in agriculture. As a result, the march has been the center of power in northern Nester Major for centuries, especially since the days of the Confederation of Stachelort (6254-7152).

The Settant Sea borders Brücht to the south and the march has several ports along this coastline. The Rinn and Miklu Rivers are both major navigable waterways. Other significant navigable rivers include the Austan, Fuhr, and Nagold Rivers. Nester Bay and the country of XXX make up Brücht's eastern boundary. To the northeast lies Hoystraland march, with Nesterland march at the northeast corner. Northwest of Brücht is the march of Vestanfell.

The Wolkesockel is the tallest peak in Stachelort.

Hoystraland is one of two marches without direct sea access. It is the smallest by both area (53,399 km2; 33,181 sq mi) and population (2,617,607). Nontheless, Hoystraland is important, geographically. Stachelort's most important river, the Rinn River, has its headwaters in the march. Significant tributaries of the Rinn include the navigable Langr River and the whitewater Otam. Hoystraland is also home to the country's tallest peak, the Wolkesockel, at 4,369 m (14,334 ft).

A hydroelectric dam on the Langr River has created Lake Langr, a reservoir which stretches into Nesterland.

Leefit is the northeastern march. Its capital city, Doppeltzufluchten, is so-named for its double harbors, located on either side of the peninsula on which it sits. The western harbor is home to Stolvic Werft, the oldest shipbuilding concern in the country.

The Füssen Pass road across the Rückgrat Mountains.

Nesterland is the other of two marches without direct sea access. It is also the second smallest in both area, at 56,615 km2 (35,179 sq mi), and population, with 2,818,119 people.

The Füssen Pass between Nesterland and Leefit is one of the first land routes across the Rückgrat Mountains. The pass lies in the Füssen Gap between the Stachel Highlands and the central highlands of the Rückgrat range. The highest peak in the central highlands is Mount Skyggnakoll, located on the Leefit-Nesterland borders with XXX. At 4,059 m (13,317 ft), Mount Skyggnakoll is the fourth highest peak in the range. As to whether the summit is actually on Stachelortan terrain or the land of XXX has been a matter of an ongoing territorial dispute since at least the 7100s.

Waters from the Lake Langr reservoir cross the Hoystraland-Nesterland border in the southwest. Created by a dam in Hoystraland for hydroelectric power, the reservoir is a recreational draw in Nesterland.

Ski lift at Zufluchtsort Westerberg in the Rückgrat Mountains, Nordrisland.

Nordrisland is the northwestern march and is closest to Stoldavia which lies just across the Straits of Stelneck from Nester Major. The march has been a major trade center since the times of the Orkanan Realm due to this proximity to Stoldavia. Nordrisland is the largest of the six marches in area at 75,576 km2 and numbers third in population with 5,048,572 residents. The march capital is Höfenborg.

With relatively warmer waters entering the Straits of Stelneck from the Anaro-runion currents of the Settant Sea, Nordrisland sees some significant snowfalls the as winds drive the moisture-laden air into the Rückgrat Mountains. As a result, the march is popular for skiing and winter sport in the Stachel Highlands. The annual Stachel Eljun is a two-day event including downhill and cross-country orienteering over a distance of 145 to 165 km (90 to 102 mi) with dozens of targets located at close to long range along the route. It is considered the preeminent ski archery challenge in the world.

Lead and coal are the only ores and minerals found in Nordrisland in any economically noteworthy amounts. Once known for its spas in the mountains, however, the march is beginning to capitalize on its abundance of geothermal energy. The abundance of coal and geothermal has established Nordrisland as the energy stronghold of the country.

Vestanfell

Vestanfell is the second largest march by population and third largest in population.
