United League

The United League was created in 7495 as a mutual security agreement between Helreich, Mörenburg, New Stoldavia and New Südentor. In 7496, Errea and Anat Tahan joined the alliance.

Aschgæt Alliance

Created by the Aschgæt Treaty signed by Aedeland, Amberia, Anisora, and Auresia in 7498 in response to the United League's declaration of war against Auresia. Halland reluctantly joins in 7498 in response to both blockades, but would later break from the alliance due to tensions with Auresia. In 7511, Penryn and Ådalen join the alliance.

Häverist-Wolgos Conflict

Post-War Events

Background

In the preceding century, the monarchies of Anaria had aligned and intermarried creating a delicate network of kinship alliances. Particularly dominant among Anaria's ruling families were the Dynast Sovereign of Auresia, Willem II, and the Emperor of the ailing Stoldavic Empire, Francis Varen-Möre. Willem II was connected to the monarchies of Anisora, Penryn, and Liden through his cousins, Bastian, regent of Amberia, and several leading families in Aedeland. Francis held connections to the former constituents of the Stoldavic Empire, including Kaiser Frederick Sävert III of Helland, King Steinar of Hagen, Jarl Ådahl of Ådalen, King Vilhelm of Liden, and Ingrid of Aedeland.

As a result of the Tandem Wars between Helland and Amberia, Amberia and Aurasia gained control over the major straights of Anaria while Helland bore great devastation that ultimately inspired the Decemberist Revolution in 7473. During the decades of uneasy peace following the Tandem Wars, Auresian and Amberian colonization flourished with little interference. At the same time, Häverist Helland, now more commonly named Helreich, experienced decades of reconstruction and adaption to its new government. In these years Helreich experienced an age of ambition and intellectualism, aggressively building up their economy and military to pre-war levels.

Amberian and Auresian control of the eastern Anarian straits greatly upset the balance of power to Amberia and Auresia's favor. Amberian-Auresian naval dominance challenged Anisora's naval control of the Medio Sea. Furthermore, the Amberian-Auresian presence in the eastern Medio further reinforced Auresia's control of the Scavic Peninsular and was viewed as a threat to the continued survival of the the Nexis government of Errea. At the same time, Amberia returned to its quiet annexation of Hayrand from Anat Tahan that had begun in 7451 following the Great Tharnian War.

Concerned by Helreich's recovery and the increasing possibility of conflict with Anisora and Errea, Auresia and Amberia shifted their resources to strengthening their military capabilities. In response, Helreich established an alliance with other Dölmer peoples of the former Stoldavic Empire, such as the Häverist puppet-state of Republic of Tauberg, the colonies of New Hapsburg and New Südentor, creating the United League in 7495. Errea and Anat Tahan joined the United League the following year.

Pre-War Events

The tangled web of alliances that determined access to the critical Anarian straits became increasingly burdensome through the 7490s. Immediately following the Tandem War, Auresia began to strategically starve Helreich of coal. In response, Helreich began equipping the Reichsmarine with superior naval vessels powered by oil sourced from Anat Tahan, making access to the Sinian Sea critical for Hoffnung's long-term naval capability. Although Aedeland's control of the Straits of Andlát and Zeeëngten made northern access unreliable, the disputed control of the western straits among Auresia and Anisora allowed Helreich unchallenged access to Anat Tahan.

Amberia and Auresia began to convert their navies to oil in 7479 but were still not fully aware of the extent of Helreich's military build-up. By 7492, Helreich, Amberia, and Auresia were engaged in an enthusiastic arms race. When Anat Tahan joined the United League, in 7496, it immediately cut off oil to Amberia and Auresia. As a result, Auresia and Amberia were forced into lengthy and expensive retrofits of their most advanced warships. Infuriated, Auresia began harassing Helriech supply ships moving oil through the Hattaro Straits. Willem II brushed off protests from Helriech and Anisora demanding that Auresia respect the neutrality of the Medio and the independence of the Hattaro Straits.

In late March 7498, the Reichsmarine began escorting supply ships through the Straits of Hattaro. Claiming that the neutrality of the Medio had been compromised and citing violations of the terms of the Treaty of Ostburg, Willem II ordered the April 6th blockade of all Hellish vessels attempting the pass through the Hattaro Straits. The United League responded with a declaration of war on Auresia the following day. Auresia's allies', Amberia and Aedeland, declared war on the United League..

Course of the War

Medio Campaign

From the outset, belligerents on both sides justified their actions as necessary for maintaining the neutrality of the Medio. Immediately following the blockade declaration of April 6th, the Distribution Apparatus dispatched its entire fleet of oil tankers under escort to maximize its strategic reserve of oil. Hellish oil ships escorted by Reichsmarine warships, largely ignored initial attempts by the outgunned Imperial Transit Militia to enforce the blockade and the first skirmishes were little more than harassing exchanges. The Auresian War Office requested all allied ships in the region to assist with the blockade. The Sørland, flagship of Aedeland's southern fleet, sailing alone through the Medio on a return leg to Storhavn, was the first to respond. The overconfident Sørland attempted to engage the Hellish tanker Öler on April 9th and was swiftly engaged by the Öler's escort and sunk. The Allied powers, shocked by the Sørland incident and having greatly underestimated the size and capability of the rebuilt Reichsmarine, raced to recall their fleets from distant ports.

An Auresian squadron patrolling the Soll encountered the foundering Sørland unexpectedly and began rescue efforts on April 10th. Neither Hellish nor Auresian formations anticipated engaging a full force. Given the Hellish superiority in speed, firepower, efficiency and numbers, why the Auresian commander, one Tribune Yaltauri, chose to engage puzzles historians. The accepted view among the tribune's colleagues was that he was "constitutionally incapable of refusing action". The more common explanation is that the Tribune likely initially expected a single ship and, realizing that his mission was impossible, sought to delay and damage the Hellish invasion fleet.

The Hellish fleet, en route to the Grand Fortress in Impport, spotted smoke from the Auresian line at 16:17. After a 90 minute chase, the Hellish waited until the setting sun outlined the Auresian squadron. Seven Auresian ships were sunk early in the battle. Two ships escaped in the confusion of darkness but sustained heavy damage. In the darkness a severely listing Auresian ship was discovered and promptly sunk after declining the Hellish invitation to surrender.

Assault on Impport

"I don't give a damn who built it, if those Hellish bastards cross the Netaluma, you hit those detonators!"

  • Brigadier Girolano Pascuti, commenting on the anticipated Hellish crossing of the Old Netaluma Bridge.

In order to control the Hattaro, the Hellish fleet determined it must take Impport. However, the massive cannons of the Grand Fortress at Impport were considered the most advanced coastal defense of the time. A direct naval bombardment of the city would certainly place the Hellish fleet at great risk. In the early hours of April 12th, hundreds of airships silently darkened the skies above Impport. The aerial bombardment of Impport was the first of its kind. The cannons of the Grand Fortress, designed specifically to target warships at the eastern mouth of the straits, were useless against the aerial armada. After six hours of constant aerial bombardment, the Hellish fleet began firing on Impport. The Grand Fortress fell in the early hours of April 14th.

It would take three more months of fierce fighting for Impport to fall the Hellish invasion force. The loss of Impport was a devastating blow. The metropolis would serve as a base from which the Hellish invasion force would launch its Auresian Campaign. The city would spend another twenty-three years as a battleground as Allied forces worked to extract the invaders, and the history of those urban campaigns would spawn numerous resistence cells to the Hellish presence. Almost a half million Auresians would die in the city's street-to-street warfare.

First Battle of the Soll

The fall of the Grand Fortress, long considered nigh impregnable, was a further shock to the Alliance, who were increasingly finding themselves outmaneuvered by the Hellish. The initiative had been lost, but there was still hope: Amberia had learned the lessons of the Tandem Wars well, and from that time had always kept a relatively sizable portion of the White Fleet in reserve. Among the ships at berth in the Cheltic Isles was the battleship Daudeiþa, newly built but among the most advanced warships available. Buoyed by this, and determined the relieve their allies, the Amberians sent forces to first cut off the Hellish supply route to the Hattaro. This move, however, was anticipated. Battle was joined on May 15th in midmorning when the Amberian squadrons, led by Daudeiþa, engaged ships of the Reichsmarine the western Soll.

Again, the ingenuity of Hellish leadership was on display. Numerically, the two surface fleets were roughly equal - the Amberians actually had a slight advantage. In addition, the prestige of the White Fleet was not to be underestimated. In fact, historians speculate it was because of the Amberian reputation for seamanship that the Hellish commanders decided the presence of airships was necessary, another novel concept. They did not darken the sky, as they had at Impport. Rather, they were used as insurance; wary of aerial bombardment, their cannons incapable of aiming too high, the Amberians were continually forced out of effective range, and few hours later, they had little choice but to retreat. No ships had been lost on either side: indeed, few shots from either combatant had found their target.

The White Fleet took up a position in the Ær Strait, in order to keep communication between Helreich and Auresia open. Hellish control of the Soll would not be seriously challenged for another year, not until the Third Battle of the Soll and within that time, Anat Tahan petroleum continued to flow to Helreich and its allies.

Seige of Oseidon

By mid June the Hellish invasion force had gained control of Impport and began its Auresian campaign with a siege of Oseidon. This culminated in a battle between Auresian and Hellish forces that saw two entire districts of the city laid waste when the arrival of heavy artillery and airship reinforcements from central Auresia and Amberia forced turned the city into an urban warzone. It would be almost nineteen years of constant street-to-street fighting before the Hellish offensive efforts were crushed. Advances and withdrawals were measured in city blocks and streets gained, and little else. By the time Oseidon was finally liberated from Hellish forces, it is said that only three out of every 10 buildings in the city were still standing, and it was said some two-thirds of the city population was killed in the fighting.

Stalemate in the Medio Campaign

Retreat from the Medio

By 7521RH, Hellish forces were forced to leave with the coming collapse of their supply chain from the Hellish homeland. Even though the Hellish navy followed an aggressive and effective campaign to destroy as many naval forces and ports of both Auresia and Amberia, both Auresia and Amberian naval forces were able to rebuild their naval forces in the relative safety of out-of-reach colonies such as New Amberia. The Ashgaet Alliance also was able to purchase many smaller naval vessels from neutral powers in southern Anaria. To add to this coming threat, Anisora left the United League in favor of becoming a neutral power, and eventually allying with the Ashgaet Alliance. The United League, forced to confront the changing circumstances of the war, decided to enact a large scale evacuation of Auresia. The battle on the ground was deteriorating over the past decade, leading to the deaths of millions of Hellish soldiers on the Medio front. With the loss of Anisora's help in protecting Anat Tahan petroleum, the front and cause was considered lost. The evacuation took place over a period of months (a time period where Auresia increased its offensives against Hellish lines) and was considered an overall success as the navy was able to successfully able to fight off Aldsegian raiders with only relatively minor losses.

Aldsegian Involvement

See Aldsegian Expeditionary Force Order of Battle (7498)'

It took Aedeland nearly three months from the declaration of war following the sinking of the Sørland to mobilize its expeditionary army. Two corps with a total 56,000 men were sent to Amberia where they joined the Amberian forces preparing for an amphibious assault on Häverist occupied Auresia. Aedelish units were involved in almost every major battle of the Auresian Campaign.

The Aedelish navy was ill equipped to engage the navies of the United League. Most of the Medio Campaign was fought by the Auresian and Ambeian navies as a result. However, the Aedelish navy was active in both the Sinian and the Stolvic conducting raids and opportunistic strikes.

Wolgos Involvement

Main article: Häverist-Wolgos War

The Wolgos entered into the Pan-Anarian within four years of the war starting as a scavenging force on the Side of Helreich to take advantage of weakened states, at first providing resources for Helreich’s war effort but subsequently deploying forces to areas they considered easy picking.

The Wolgos fought well but mercilessly and often wiping out civilians or enslaving them and Their increasingly repugnant atrocities in the battlefield made the Wolgos knights often more valuable as a psychological weapon when adding their hellish Allies.

As the war continued the Wolgos Empire over extended and pressures from both their colonial expansion and home hardships weakened the Monastic rule. The hellish state turned on the Wolgos with the excuse that such people cannot live amongst civilised Anarians, the Wolgos empire at this time was a minor power compared to Helreich and was soon overrun by the hellish forces.

The Hellish-Wolgos conflict as part of the Pan-Anarian war constituted a genocide by the Haeverist but it’s usually seen as justified.

Penrish Civil War

The Penrish Civil War broke out in the Kingdom of Penrhyn and Iseldir in spring 7527. Although for the most part fought between internal monarchist and republican forces, certain foreign powers were involved and had some influence in the outcome of the war. The war ended in August 7543 with victory for the republican rebels and the foundation of a republic, the Union of Glyndroweth.

Extensive portions of Aquitania Province were severely damaged in the years of fighting that took place throughout the western empire. The Empire has expended hundreds of millions of florins and many thousands of labour hours in rebuilding and restoring the communities and the countryside. Foreign aid has come from a few discreet sources, as well as considerable expenditure on the part of CHAIM in restoring the war-ravaged land. By the advent of the twentieth anniversary of the conclusion of the PAW, this initiative had been reported as being largely completed.
