Stachelort, officially the Republic of Stachelort (Stoldish: Republik Stachelort), is a country on the island of Nester Major. It is in the eastern part of the continent of Anaria. The Straits of Stelneck lie between Stachelort and Stoldavia to the northwest, with the North Stolvic Ocean to the northeast and east. West of Stachelort is the Settant Sea. Neighboring Stachelort to the south on Nester Major is XXX.

The name derives from stachel, meaning “spiny”, and ort, meaning “place”. Scholars attribute this to the spiny terrain of the Stachel highlands encompassing the northern half of the Rückgrat Mountains which run the length of Nester Major.

Main article: History of Stachelort

From the early hunter-gatherer and nomadic tribes, Nesterians began to form family-based villages in the Copper Age, developing defensive capabilities during the Bronze Age. This was significant for the Brücht tribes when the Wolgos began raiding Nester for slaves during the Iron Age.

Orkanan Realm

Main article: Orkanan Realm

Nester became part of the Orkanan Realm in the 5100s. During this time, the Orkanan religion supplanted pagan rituals and trade with seafaring peoples grew. The Orkanan Realm introduced the concept of nobility to Nester, resulting in the formation of marches, counties, and viscounties, along with fortified towns. This went a long way to stopping the Wolgos raids along the Nesterian coasts.

Dragar Monopoly

Main article: Dragar Monopoly

When the Orkanan Realm collapsed in 5713, the Dragar Monopoly (5638-6315) became more influential in Nester, not least of which from its trade practices. Being far from the Dragar capital left the Nesterian marches fairly autonomous.

Confederation of Stachelort

Main article: Confederation of Stachelort

The decline of the Dragar Monoply led to the northern Nesterian marches forming the Confederation of Stachelort on April 7, 6254. This is the first official use of Stachelort as a political entity. The stated purpose of the confederation was to enhance collective defense and further the development of trade. Although groups of craftsmen and tradesmen had formed guilds as far back as the late Orkanan Realm, the guild system began to become formalized during the confederation. Trade with the Skara Samverkan brought Sunna (Mellanhand) beliefs in Orkanan along with Scarch influences to the language.

In 6942, the Confederation became part of the Greater Stoldavic Empire. Mellanhand Orkanan continued to grow to the point it supplanted Fyrirhugun Orkanan in the 7100s. The rise of Stellism in Helreich was not well received by the majority of Stachelortans, who clung to their traditionalist views. Nonetheless, some in the nobility did subscribe to the new variant of Orkanan.

Duchy of Stachelort

Main article: Duchy of Stachelort
The small dining room at Felsenburg where the decision to become the Duchy of Stachelort was taken.

When Helreich declared Stellist Orkanan the state religion and civil war in the Stoldavic Empire broke out, the Emperor offered the Stachelortan confederation the chance to become a duchy. Count (Graf) Luitger von Sulzbach of Brücht lobbied his counterparts to vote in favor. By manipulating the vote, which passed, he became the first Duke (Stoldish: Herzog) on October 10, 7152. In exchange, von Sulzbach promised support to the Empire. In reality, Stachelort’s support turned out to be mostly a lack of involvement on either side.

After the collapse of the Greater Stoldavic Empire in 7156, the Duchy became independent, never again to fall under another state’s hegemony. During the Anarian period of colonization, the Duchy established the Stachelort D'Runia colony in northwestern D'Runia.

Tandem Wars

Main article: Tandem Wars

Stachelort sided with the New Stoldavic Empire during the Tandem Wars of 7446-49 and 7465-73, viewing the issue at hand as eastern Anarian states defending against domineering central Anarian powers. With much of the first war fought at sea, the Duchy lost most of its fleet. As a consequence, the Duchy was much less involved in the second war due to the difficulty of moving troops and supplies to the battlefields.

Pan-Anarian War

Main article: Pan-Anarian War

Facing the same economic encroachment and fundamental issues as during the Tandem Wars, Stachelort joined the United League in 7498. The duchy had only minor involvement during the early periods of the Pan-Anarian War (7498-7552) since most fighting was taking place around the Medio Sea. During the 7530s, Stachelort rebuilt its fleet, including its first dreadnought, the SHS Herzogtum, commissioned in 7537.

With greater involvement in the war, Stachelort began to suffer significant combat casualties and the new fleet, including the dreadnought, was decimated. The growing costs of the war resulted unpopularity at home. Eventually, several antiwar factions began public protests. Many of these groups combined to form the Stachelortans First Party. Their platform was to save the lives of the country’s sons and rebuilt the economy by withdrawing from the Pan-Anarian War. Realizing the change in popular opinion and recognizing how thin available resources were, the military began lobbying the Duke to end Stachelortan involvement.

Preservationist Coup

Main article: Preservationist Coup

During the Häverist-Wolgos War (7544-7552), the military realized Helreich was engaged in a two-front war, with little reserve to compel further Stachelortan involvement in the Pan-Anarian War. On June 30, 7545, the military sequestered the Duke and Counts, presenting the Duke with an ultimatum to end the war. Instead, Duke Gunther Luitger von Sulzbach issued a call to arms, which led to sporadic rioting in several cities. The military quelled the disturbances and seized control of government.

On July 1st, Admiral Lorenz Saller demanded the Duke withdraw from the war or abdicate the thrown. The Duke refused until July 2nd, when he was presented with the choice of renouncing his authority or being arrested and publicly tried. At 12:45, the Duke signed the Framework of the Republic of Stachelort, ending the reign of the nobility in Stachelort.

Republic of Stachelort

Admiral Saller became the first Autokrat of the new republic. He promised conciliation and the Stachelortans First called for the new government to be given a chance. On July 7, 7545, Stachelort withdrew from the United League and ceased participation in the Pan-Anarian War. The first State Assembly of Stachelort was elected on August 1st and seated mid-month.

Main article: Geography of Stachelort
Topographic map of Stachelort.

Stachelort lies in the northern half of Nester Major. It has an area of 390,409 square kilometers (242,589 square miles), consisting of (376,741 sq km of land (234,096 sq mi) and 13,668 sq km (8,493 sq mi) of water. The Stachel Highlands and Rückgrat Mountains form the dominant terrain in northern and eastern mid-Stachelort. At 4,369 meters (14,334 feet), Wolkesockel is the highest peak on Nester Minor.

The Nestorian central plains west of the mountains have a temperate climate and the plains are the breadbasket of the country. The coastal plains also enjoy temperate weather, with average temperatures ranging from 0 to 15 ° C (32 to 60 ° F). Annual rainfall amounts vary from 10 to 140 cm (4 to 55 in). in the Rückgrat Mountains, the climate is more alpine. Average temperatures range from -35 to 10 ° C (-32 to 50 ° F) in the mountains.

Natural resources

Significant iron and precious metals, especially silver, deposits lead the list of Stachelort's natural resources. The many rivers are sources of food and water, and many are navigable for transportation purposes. Stachelort has an extensive coastline, giving access to the bounties of the seas and oceans.

Stachelort is a multi-party state. The Stachelortans First Party is the largest party. It holds 65% of the seats in the State Assembly.

Main article: Government of Stachelort

The Framework of the Republic of Stachelort establishes the basic structure of governance and defines key authorities. It also defines the basis for citizenship. Stachelort is a unitary autocracy, with the Autokrat being both head of state and head of government. As an autocracy, the Autokrat is an absolute leader not subject to judicial or other review.

Nikolo Lusky
Autokrat since 7573

Nikolo Lusky is the third and current Autokrat, serving as both head of state and head of government. He appoints the various Ministers who serve as heads of their respective government departments. The Ministers, Chancellor, Protector of Stachelort D'Runia, and heads of the military services comprise the cabinet-level Council of Ministers for advising the Autokrat and selecting his successor.

Men attain citizenship upon completion of their compulsory military or civil service requirement. They elect members to the State Assembly, Stachelort’s unicameral parliament. It is charged with expressing the views of the citizenry and does not have legislative authority. The State Assembly consists of 300 Assemblymen, most of whom are elected on a geo-populational basis. Each province and borough seats another 2 Assemblymen on the basis of their status, and the capital, Seetor, is allocated an additional 2 Assemblymen. The colony of Stachelort D'Runia sends 2 Assemblymen as well.

The Supreme Court is the highest court of Stachelort and has jurisdiction in whatever matters it deems to have an interest in. Subordinate courts handle civil and criminal complaints in separate, but parallel, systems. The ordinary court is the court of first instance and may hold trials for minor matters. More serious matters go to trial before the superior court, which may also hear matters on appeal from the district court. Appeals of judgements by the superior court go before the tribunal court which, as the name implies, has 3 judges to hear the matter, although the court itself often has many more judges.

Administrative divisions

Within the provinces are several districts (Stoldish: Bezirk, plural: Bezirke), totaling 91, overseen by a governor (Stoldish: Gouverneur). Stachelort also recognizes cities, towns, and villages as administrative subdivisions.

Main article: Military of Stachelort

The Autokrat is the supreme commander over all of Stachelort’s military forces. Each service has an appointed commander-in-chief.

Stachelort’s Navy, under the direction of the Admiral, protects the country’s coasts and its interests abroad, including the colony at Stachelort D'Runia. For command and control, the Navy operates in four geographically-oriented fleets: West, North, East, and South. Separate from, but affiliated with, the Navy is a Stachelortan Coast Guard which may be incorporated into the Navy during times of war. The Navy has recently been replacing losses from the Tandem and Pan-Anarian Wars. The new dreadnought RSS Das Republik was commissioned in 7576 and two new cruisers are currently building in shipyards.

Units of the Army have charge of defending the Stachelortan homeland as well as any overseas holdings. The Army also serves to advance the country’s interests abroad whenever called upon to do so. The Colonel-General commands Army forces, which are organized under a regimental system drawn from each of the marches. The Army can field 254 regiments from the Homelands.

As the newest military branch, the Sky Armada provides observation, skyborne munitions, air superiority, and aerial transport in support of ground and sea forces. The Sky Admiral commands the Sky Armada.

Citizenship and nationality

Males born of Stachelortan parents attain citizenship upon completion of their state service (Stoldish: Staatsdienst). State service is compulsory and must be begun by age 18 unless deferred for university. Most males complete their service with two years in the military or four years in police service. Men may also request to perform six years in the government service instead of military or police work. The Labor Ministry administers the state service program.

Females born of Stachelortan parents attain nationality upon reaching their 18th birthday. There is no citizenship option for persons not born of Stachelortan parents but such persons may apply for Stachelortan nationality with the State Ministry.

Section 5 of the Framework of the Republic of Stachelort addresses the conference and withdrawel of citizenhip. By law, nationality is withdrawn for the same reasons as withdrawel of citizenship: disloyalty, allegiance to a foreign state, consorting with an enemy, treason or espionage, or denouncing citizenship or nationality.

Foreign policy

Since independence in 7156, Stachelort's foreign policy has generally aligned with its eastern Anarian neighbors who, at one time or another, were imperial overlords of the Nesterian Isles. During the Tandem Wars and the Pan-Anarian War, Stachelort sided with Helreich against central-Anarian powers. In both cases, this proved disastrous for Stachelort and directly contributed to the formation of the modern Repubic, founded in 7545.

Trade has always been a major economic factor in Stachelort. Since the Pan-Anarian War, the country's foreign policy has been somewhat isolationist in political matters, but very engaged in efforts to facilitate open trade. In this regard, Stachelort is openly critical of the centrai-Anarian powers' Straits Cartel while at the same time support the sovereignty and unhindered vessel transit provisions of the Treaty of Ærilar. In particular, Stachelort finds the Protocols of Gadelhem intrusive, burdensome, and an infringement on sovereignty and free transit on the seas.

Main article: Economy of Stachelort

Stachelort has a thriving economy as a result of an abundance of natural resources and the strong work ethic of its people. The State Economic Commission establishes economic priorities, sets production targets, determines resource allocations, and monitors economic progress. While various Ministries, including Agriculture, Industry, Labor, and Trade, have influence, the Guilds (Stoldish: Zunft, plural: Zunfte) set occupational and quality standards for virtually every aspect of the national economy. Today, there are 531 Guilds in a system dating from around 6200 RH: 349 craft guilds, 92 trade guilds, and 90 merchant guilds. While each guild is independent and sets its own rules, nearly all of the guilds belong to the Chamber of Guilds (Stoldish: Zunftekammer) as a means of coordination and exercising political clout.

With Nester situated on the shipping lanes crossroads between Anaria, Altaia, and D'Runia, there is a lot of trade and maritime activity in Stachelort. This gave rise to banking in the mid-7300s. Dozens of commercial banks have developed long-term relationships with clients across the globe. Discreet private bankers in Stachelort offer a wide variety of financial services. Stachelort's banking privacy laws and the Finance Guardians (Stoldish: Finanzhüter) ensure the security of deposits, financial transactions, and bank-related business.

The advent of the energy-based economic system of Häverist countries, including Helreich, Mörenburg, and the Riss, has been a boon to the larger Stachelortan banks. They have established a niche in translating economic value between the Häverist energy credits and the more common monetary systems used by most of the world. These banks have a presence and expertise with the Häverist Interconomic Distribution Apparatus.

With the advent of methods for producing steel, the industry is expanding rapidly. Stachelort also has one of the preeminent chemical industries in the world, particularly in the fields of dyes and medicine.

Norrie iron ore mine.

Large deposits of coal and iron ore led to the development of a significant mining industry to exploit these commodities. The largest iron mines operate in the Vestanfell and Brücht marches, with coal coming mostly from the Stachel Highlands in Nordrisland.

Precious metal deposits have led to gold mines in Brücht and silver mines in a band across southern Stachelort. Economically viable lead deposits can also be found throughout the country. Stachelort also has a surplus of tin and bauxite.

Stachelortan scientists and inventors have been credited with a number of discoveries and inventions, including the compression ignition engine.

The nature of mining and manufacturing call for a well developed system of transport. Stachelort makes extensive use of its navigable waterways and ports. Comprehensive road and railway networks connect mines, farms, industries, towns, and ports with raw materials, finished goods, and passenger services.

With 29.5 million people, Stachelort is the most populous country in the Nesterian Isles, and second most populous country in eastern Anaria, behind Helreich. Stachelort's population density is 76 per kilometer (122 per square mile).

Most Stachelortans are ethnic Brücht, comprising 76.4% of the population. There is a significant Dölmer minority, particularly in the northern coastal regions. Dolmer people make up 11.5% of Stachelortans. Another 4.2% of the population is Aldsay and there are 3.4% Cheltai, 1.5% Karsk, and 1.4% Tragoni, as well. The remaining 3.1% of the population identify as belonging to a variety of other ethnicities.

Stoldish is the official and only recognized language. It is considered rude, at best, to speak in another language in public; at worst, doing so invites attention from the State Protection Service (Stoldish: ‘’Schutzdienst Stachelort’’ or SDS).

Orkanan is the largest religion with 26,139,780 followers, or about 88.7% of the population. Mellanhand Orkanan the primary belief system, with 67.6% of the population, followed by Peratolian Orkanan at 9.5%. Dominant Orkanan beliefs tend toward the traditional and interventionism, with many concepts from the original Fyrirhugun Orkanan influencing current religious viewpoints. The Fyrirhugun Congreation of Nester has 176,800 members (0.6% of the population) in Stachelort.

There are also congregations of Lazarian Orkanan (2.7%) and Cydhlig Orkana (1.6%). Although considered heretical by most Stachelortan Orkanan followers, a sizeable congreation of Stellist-Orkanan exists, with 1,974,480 followers, representing 6.7% of the population. The Stellists are found particularly along the northern coastlines and in some aristocratic circles. The Autokrat is the Prelate (Stoldish: Prälat) for the Stachelortan Unified Congregations (Stoldish: Stachelort Vereintegemeinden), the umbrella congregation for all Orkanan denominations in the country.

Non-Orkanan religious denominations constitute about 7.9% of the population, or 2,328,120. These include The Faith, at 2.1%, Sadarisnism, at 1.9%, Kamuran Celestialism, at 1.4% or 412,580 followers, and Izha, at 1.3%. Anurism and Shuocianism have small followings. About 3.4% of the population profess no religion.

School is compulsory from ages 5 through 15. As a result, the literacy rate is very high at about 90.6% of adults 20 years of age and older. Entrance to high school or a college-preparatory academy is competitive and based in large part on performance in the primary and middle schools. Stachelort has excellent universities.

Hearty, simple meals are popular in the Stachel Highlands, with one-pot meals like goulash being common. Stachelortans enjoy breads and cheeses throughout the country. Among meats, beef and pork can be found on most tables, with sausages being a typical means of consumption. Potatoes and vegetables are other staples in the diet.

Wild game is a frequent source of meals in the rural areas. Spicy foods, particularly in Brücht, comprise another variety of frequently found cuisine.

If there is a national sport in Stachelort, it is stickball. The game is played in many variations throughout the country, with few standard rules recognized throughout. The game originated during the Orkanan Realm and has been a mainstay since at least the 5300s. Today, it is played through the school years and many amateur and semi-professional clubs have post-school players into their midlife years. With these clubs, rivalries between municipalities, districts, and even provinces and marches, can be taken quite seriously and as a matter of local pride. Such matches constitute the highest attendance spectator sport in the country.

During the winter, when snow cover prevents playing stickball, schleudern (Hallish: hurling) is a popular substitute. The game is somewhat a variant of stickball played on an ice rink. The players skate around the rink with the objective of hurling the Schiebe, a round disk of vulcanized rubber, into the goal of the opposing team, using a stick. Schleudern is less popular than stickball, but semi-professional matches between clubs in the major cities can draw sizeable audiences.

A ski shooter from the 3rd Nordrisland Mountain Regiment, c. 7498.

In 6353, the Confederation of Stachelort decreed "all sorts of men under the age of sixty years shall have bows and arrows, and use shooting." At the time, a boy was considered a man at age 15. The effect of this law was to require males to have a bow and arrows and be proficient at archery. As a result, archery competitions were commonplace up until the turn of the 75th century and remain popular to this day. With the invention of firearms, marksmanship competitions have also developed fairly large levels of participation.

The Stachel Highlands and, especially, Rückgrat Mountains are known for their good quality skiing during winter. Mountain regiments of the military developed Skibogenschießen, a combination of skiing and archery, in the 6440s. Today, both military and civilian competitors try to outshoot each other in cross-country and downhill courses and races. The annual Stachel Eljun is a two-day event including downhill and cross-country orienteering over a distance of 145 to 165 km (90 to 102 mi) with dozens of targets located at close to long range along the route. It is considered the preeminent ski archery challenge in the world. Ski shooting is the same as ski archery but using a firearm instead of a bow and arrows. Ski shooting competitions are a source of pride among the military's mountain regiments.

Football has found its way to Stachelort. While it has a sizeable number of amateur players, the following is not nearly as large as either stickball or schleudern. Another common set of sport competitions are the track and field events. These are popular during the school years, but the number of participants drops post-educationally.

Public holidays

Stachelort has eight annual public holidays. On these holidays, government offices and financial institutions are closed. If the holiday falls on a weekend, government offices and banks do not open on the Monday after the holiday. Although not required to do so, many private concerns also close on holidays as a matter of tradition and to allow their workforce the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends.

New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1st. The Spring Equinox generally falls in the third week of March and the Summer Solstice likewise is usually during the third week of June. Republic Day, on July 2nd, recognizes the founding of the current Republic of Stachelort following the Preservationist Coup in 7545. August 2nd, the date on which the first Tandem War ended in 7449, is Remembrance Day dedicated to honoring the lives lost by Stachelortan military personnel in any war from the days of the Orkanan Realm onward to present. September 14th marks Stachelortan independence when the Duchy of Stachelort became independent from the Greater Stoldavic Empire in 7156. The Harvest Fest occurs on the Fall Equinox during the third week in September. Winter Solstice celebrations take place in the third week of December.
