History

Margrave (Markgraf) Ekkehard von Fuchswald, of Vestanfell established the Castle Guard (Stoldish: Burgsgarde) on February 11, 7304 RH as a single special force responsible for guarding all of his castles and palaces in the march. Ekkehard wanted the guard force to be loyal to him through a single castelan. Before this time, each had its own independent guard, provided, as was customary, by counts in the area around the margrave's castle. As time went on, and government grew, the Castle Guard's duties were expanded to protecting government buildings, which also served to reinforce the margrave's authority throughout the march.

Following the Preservationist Coup in 7545, Autokrat Lorenz Saller nationalized the Castle Guard and renamed it the State Guard. Initially, it was charged with securing the Autokrat and ministers of state, as well as their offices and residences. Responsibility for all national-level government buildings was added within a few months, making the State Guard a nationwide law enforcement organ. The new writ greatly expanded the personnel requirements of the agency, but it soon reestablished its stringent selection requirements.

Personnel

Personnel of the State Guard on duty.

Applicants for the State Guard must have completed their compulsory service (Stoldish: Staatsdienst) in the military and have at least two additional years of service in a police or security service organization. Lack of either military or police experience is disqualifying. Candidates must also be in excellent physical and psychological health, as verified by examinations, and have no criminal convictions.

New Guardsmen {Stoldish: Gardist, plural Guardisten) go through the State Gaurd's own 6-week basic training before a 6-month internship with seasoned Guardsmen. Subsequently, they will attend additional training under the auspices of the Guard, the Civil Militia, or the State Protection Service.

Uniforms and equipment

Guardsmen work in uniform or plainclothes, depending upon their duty assignment. The State Guard uniform consists of a dark gray tunic with black pants and calf-height polished black leather boots and a polished black leather cap bearing the State Guard emblem in silver surmounted by a blue and gold cockade. The eagle-and-wreath emblem of the State Guard hearkens from the days of the Castle Guard. The eagle, dating from the influence of the Dragar Monopoly, represents bravery, strength, and alertness, with the spread wings symbolizing protectiveness.

The State Guard uses the same weaopnry as the military services. The Meissner Modelle-10 is the standard duty pistol, although officers on plainclothes assignment usually carry the Meissner HS3 pistol. When a rifle is called for, the SFT-40Ä1 semi-automatic rifle fills the role. Officers on special assignment may carry the PF-53 (Vischer) submachinegun.

Ranks

State Guard ranks are unique. Rank insignia is worn on both collars of the tunic and coat.
