Ulrike äv Ajas-Anstegen (full name: Aje-Ulrike Láure äv Ajas-Anstegen) was an Amberian Grand Duchess, Degansmarschal of the Reikshansa, a Stratigós to the Allied Supreme Military Council, and Stratárchis of the Aschgæt Alliance from 7538 to 7548.

She is commonly counted among the ranks of the Amberian Grand Marshals, leaders of particular skill and success, and is the third and final member of the House of Ajas to make the list. Though accusations of nepotism followed her all her life, she quickly showed an interest in, and a talent for, warfare that was not unlike her mother's. Upon her election to Stratárchis, she was widely respected as an able, innovative tactician, famed for her exploits in the western front against Anat Tahan, for which she was named "The Ghost". She and her only child were among the victims of the 7550 Winter Massacre.

Biography

She was born near the city of Kälnii in the north, twelve minutes before her sister Ingeborg. The identity of her father is not concretely known: Ulrike's mother, Aje-Kateriin II, was uncharacteristically reticent on the subject, and surviving letters do not mention his name, though her fondness for him is obvious. Popular rumor and professional speculation both point to the younger son of the Deganne zu Stægn, one Êuþarik, an aide-de-camp slain in battle soon after Ulrike's birth.

From an early age, Ulrike's life was dominated by the raging Pan-Anarian War, despite her mother's best attempts to shield her children from the worst of the conflict, which included removing the royal family to the Summer Palace in the forests of the Nibelhorn. The children found themselves thrust into positions of responsibility upon Aje-Kateriin's early death in 7523, and Ulrike took advantage of war-time rules to enroll in the Reikskriigschül at the age of 17. She graduated a year and a half later at the top her class, and was assigned to the newly minted Lægio LXVII, part of the Hansa VI sent to forestall Anati aggression in southern Hayrand in 7525.

She quickly attracted the notice of her superiors, gaining notice for quick tactical decision-making and a knack for taking advantage of enemy confusion. A proponent of maneuver warfare, Ulrike excelled at catching enemy units by surprise and toying with her opponents' morale. In 7529 she was moved to the VI's command staff. By far the youngest of her peers, many resented her for her youth and her royal status, but her continued success buoyed her up the ranks such that by 7534, the year she was given leadership of the VI in a direct order from Degansmarschal Lisl Veichs herself, she was the VI's most well-known Deganslegate, respected by friend and enemy alike.

Under her leadership, the VI's original mission evolved into a full-blown invasion of Anat Tahan through the northwest of the country, with neutralization of the Anati oilfields one of her principle aims. Recalled in 7536, her half-sister the Sea-Queen appointed her one of Amberia's three Stratigós. A popular story recounts that, before her first Council meeting, she was waiting outside the meeting room, reading a copy of Veich's Aêrodriuhsen, when Auresian Field Marshal Bruarus Golgano entered and began to read the same book, prompting a half hour of discussion without either knowing who the other was. Utterly unlike her mother in temperament - Ulrike was introverted, and far more feminine - she encountered resistance to her presence from amongst the more conservative of the other countries' commanders; upon meeting her, the Aedelant Field Marshall is said to have remarked, "Why, what is this? She's just a normal woman!". Many of these commanders expressed reservations at her being chosen as Strachárchis in 7538. About one month later, she was also promoted to Degansmarschal, following the death of Lisl Veichs.

Her time as Strachárchis was largely taken up by war against the H'lrike, who in XXX had betrayed Helreich and launched their own assault upon the nations of Anaria. Though never a believer in old-style gentlemen's warfare, she was nonetheless known for her mercy and kindness towards her enemies; the total war necessitated by the Wolgos invasion tore at her, so much so that she resigned her commission in 7549, around nine months after she had completed her term as Strachárchis, and thereafter devoted her time to her only son Niklazs. The two were among the victims of the 7550 Winter Massacre.

Personal Life

Ulrike married at the age of 33, late in life for a woman of the Amberian nobility. Her husband, Berig, had served with her in the Sinnian Campaign, but nothing romantic was initiated until early 7538. Niklazs, born in 7541, was a hemophiliac. Despite her family's attempts to console her, Ulrike blamed herself for his condition and devoted the end of her life to his care.
